President's Award

“There is a difference between interest and commitment. When you are interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstance permit. When you are committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results”.

That quote applies to many individuals in Bangsar Toastmasters Club. These people are committed to the club – who are there when the club needs them. Doing a little here, a little there but doing what really counts. These are the people who make the club great, who make sure other members have the necessary environment to grow, who support and encourage others and who offer assistance whenever it is needed.

I personally believe these people need to be recognised and appreciated. People like these have made me a better person and have helped me improve continuously.

“By appreciation, we make excellence in others our own property” – Voltaire

Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.

In appreciation of the contribution, efforts and support of these individuals, I am initiating an award called the “President’s Award”.

This award will be given every 3 to 4 months, to an individual, who helps the club fulfill the 3Fs (Fulfillment, Fun & Fellowship) and embodies the following characteristics:

  1. Continuously FULFILL his/her individual goals and the club goals by doing speeches, giving evaluations, taking up roles, bringing in new members and helping other members improve themselves by mentoring and coaching them.
  2. Making club meetings and environment FUN by coming well prepared for speeches, roles and evaluations, helping with club chores like setting up room, etc, participating in club activities and creating an environment of FUN for everyone.
  3. Encourage FELLOWSHIP by encouraging members to attend meetings, being genuinely interested in the well-being of the members and offering encouragement and support to others.

The selection of the President’s Award recipient will be done by the club members themselves. Every member of the club is qualified to be selected including the Executive Committee, except the President. The first award recipient will be announced at our Installation Dinner on September 30th.

So, start recognising this individual right now – who knows it might even be you. The President’s Award is also to remind us of what being a Bangsar Toastmasters Club member is all about.

Fulfill the 3Fs and “MAKE IT HAPPEN” for you and the club.

The meeting came to order on the dot! 7.30 pm! SAA (Letchuman) was as usual meticulous.

President Lourdes reminded us of the 3Fs - Fulfillment, Fun and Fellowship.

With the introductions of 13 members and 4 guests the pace was set right! All proceedings were executed smoothly!

TME (Lucky) spoke of the benefits of Toastmasters for the benefit of our guests. This helped at least ONE guest to make decision of changing his life!

One of the two highlights of this meeting was the INDUCTION (by Muhendaran)
of 3 new members – Chandran, Renuka and Sham Sunder.

(Left to right) Ivan Fong - V/P (E), Sham Sunder, Renuka and Chandran

The Table Topics (by Letchuman) was on ‘TOURISM’

K.L.Low spoke as a tourist guide on Malaysian Food.

Subendran, as a German Tourist, spoke on places he has visited.

Ranjit Singh told us why he thought Night Spots should remain open till late hours.

Delina highlighted reasons why Fake Goods / Cheap Quality products were bad for tourism.

Shandini assured us that Tourism was potential revenue.

Delina was awarded BEST T. Topics Speaker.

We believe in IMMEDIATE feedback. The Table Topics Evaluator (Shanmugam) was thorough, and gave relevant tips on how to do better next time.

The BREAK included the second highlight – Birthday celebration of our July Babies!

Bavani, Letchuman and Shanmugam!

Bavani did her 4th assignment - Enchanting Myanmar. It was a very vivid description of her visit to this not so often spoken country. I felt like I was listening to my History and Geography teachers, took me back to my school days. The evaluation by Lourdes was very thorough and encouraging.

Muhendaran Suppiah gave The Team Technical Presentation – Club EXCO.

This potentially difficult assignment was delivered very smoothly by cleverly using the club officers to highlight their duties / functions! While it made his task simple, as he had only to act as a coordinator, I believe it had another motive – making some members aware as to what goes on behind the scenes, and this WAS achieved successfully. His evaluator, Renuka Devi, concurred on this. ACTUALLY, she highlighted, she knew then the tremendous work being done to stage a typical TM meeting! Excellent evaluation!

Ranjit Singh, his first attempt as the in house General Evaluator, performed extremely well, smoothly got his team to deliver reports. Ah Counter, Chandran, admitted he had ‘poor business’ for lack of speakers using ‘speech crutches’, though he did manage to catch a few. Grammarian, Ivan Fong, similarly found very few errors to highlight. Was it the ‘high standard’ of English (as K.L.Low felt in his feedback)? Be our guest and find out for yourself!

We have heard of sons replacing fathers, but for once we saw Tirunaukarasu do the role of the Timer, for his son Pratap. His report was short and sweet!

During President’s closing remarks, the guests were very generous in their praises. One guest was convinced he had found the right place to improve his communication skills!

Our announcements on the future activities are:

29th Aug 2006 – Role Players’ Workshop

5th Sep 2006 – Club Level – Humorous Speech & Speech Evaluation Contests!

Members & Guests wishing to participate can contact any one of the EXCO!

Meeting Review (4th July, 2006)

Today was the first meeting for the term 2006-2007.

Today, the baton was officially handed over by the towering, Immediate Past President Muhendaran to President Lourdes.

In addition to the entire EXCO being present, we had with us Bangsar Toastmasters - Bavani, Renuka (also the President of MIA), Mary (also the President of WIM); we have many Presidents in our club, the other being Rengan, who was missing in action today – President of Ernst & Young and KL Advanced.

Our ONLY guest was Kwong Chee Siong (TMIKL).

Please do take note that the word of the day for this article is not ‘President’

The WOD was “MESMERIZE”

Yours truly, Ranjit was the assigned TME with Lucky being the General Evaluator. Meeting started right on time with Lourdes tying up his maiden presidential speech to introduce the theme for the year “Make It Happen”.

Mr. Prez also promised 3 “F” words! Yes, not 1 but 3!!
FULFILMENT, FUN & FELLOWSHIP

Muhendaran hosted the Table Topics session with Ivan, Suriakumar, Bavani, Kwong and Mary sportingly ‘volunteering’, making it a lively session. It seemed like everyone was just waiting to be called out!!

Table Topics evaluation - done thoroughly by Renuka.

Best Table Topics Speaker – Mary was voted the best for the night.

Shan was for the first time ever, our Humor Master. He entertained us with his jokes… deep jokes. Very meaningful, so meaningful that some didn’t get them. Those who didn’t, please, loosen up, you guys can’t be that serious.

After the break, Lechuman did a lovely job with his candid frank opinion on “Public Bus Transportation” in his 9th speech from the C& L Manual. Lechuman is almost a CTM now. I was up next, speaking on fire hazards and prevention. Evaluators were Ivan Fong and Mary respectively.

Lucky and his team of evaluators – Bavani (Grammarian), Kwong (Ah Counter), Shandini (Timer) were up next. All of them gave good constructive feedback. Finally, Lourdes rolled out his plan, his vision, aspirations & hope for the new term for our beloved Bangsar Toastmasters Club (did you know that this club is a dream of one and a second helped the first realize his dream? Yes, that’s your Lucky and Ivan. Awesome! )
