This was our first joint meeting with MIA Toastmaster Club. Both clubs have always been close but this is the first time we decided to pool our resources together and have a joint meeting. We had to postpone our club meeting to a Thursday instead of Tuesday, but it was worth it as we had so much fun learning from each other.

MIA President, ATMB Renuka warmly welcomed the guests and spoke on the effort of having a joint meeting. She accurately predicted that the meeting will be dynamic, which it was.

Next, we had our new member, TM Sham Sunder to deliver the ‘Thought of the day’ for invocation. He told us stories about perspectives and effects on our lives.

Then, we had our humour session. Usually, the session is about three minutes but in the spirit of the recent humorous contest, we decided to give our humour master 10 minutes. Our humour master was none other than CTM Suria Kumar, the first runner up of the Area Humorous Contest. He spoke about his college days and its influence of how he got tempted to the darker side and his culinary experiences. His story was so interesting and suspenseful that we forgave him for exceeding his time limit of 10 minutes.

A Toastmaster’s meeting is ever fair. All participants are given a chance to speak in a session, the table topic session. This session was conducted by TM Ismail. TM Ismail had a theme for his session. All his topics were revolved around leadership. All six participants, three from each club gave their two cents worth on leadership.
The best speaker went to CTM Ranjit Singh.

Table Topics Evaluator, CTM Choy gave a very comprehensive and supportive evaluation of the speakers.

We had 3 good prepared speeches for the day.
First speaker, Chandran (myself) did his Basic C&L No. 10 with the title “I Want to do Great Things”. All your desires can be achieved with the key word “WANT”. Finally, finishing my first 10 speeches means two things to me. I have fulfilled my promise of obtaining a point for the club. Next, I receive my long-awaited award CC, Competent Communicator.

Second speaker, Muhendran, ATMS did his assignment No. 4 from the Advanced Manual: Technical Presentation Series. His topic was: Sexual Harassment at Work Place. He spoke on the definition of sexual harassment and how to eradicate sexual harassment at work place. His speech was definitely informative to all present at the meeting.

Our final speaker, Karen Phang, CTM did speech No. 2 from the advanced manual: Special Occasion. Her topic title was: “My Best friend”. The scenario was during her wedding and she was about to give a toast. She spoke about her best friend, her dad who gave her lots of advice about choosing the right partner. It definitely felt that all of us were present at her wedding and she was really giving a toast to her dad.

Best Speaker of the day went to Karen Phang, CTM and Best Evaluator to Ranjit Singh, CTM.

The General Evaluator, ATMB Lakhmichand, also affectionately known as “Lucky” is an out-and-out Toastmaster. With his vast experience, what can you get but honest and constructive feedback! He wrapped up a very beautiful and enjoyable evening in his distinctly ‘mellowed style’.

Kudos to all the role players, speakers, evaluators, members and guests for making it a great meeting.

See all of you at the next meeting on 3rd October 2006. Have a nice day!
